The story behind the Story...

Where this story was born

This story was born during my biking routines, with quiet stops at my favorite lake to meditate. It was created in San Francisco, inspired by the magic of everyday nature.

I would watch the ducks in the park—some swimming, others learning how to fly. One day, a giant tree fell, and I became curious: what happened to the turtles, the fish, and the ducks?

Another of my favorite stops is the bison paddock. I love watching them. I once heard children call them “monsters,” and that sparked something—how powerful imagination can be as children run through trees and create their own worlds. And that is how 5 Patitos was born.

With little ones, Spanish is not taught. Spanish is lived.

I took four ducks and the image of a fallen tree, and I told the story to my TK students. The key was simple: I hid the ducks. The children had to call them by their qualities—creativo, responsable, generoso.

It was magical to watch them search, call, and discover. Then we drew them, colored them, and brought them to life.

Later, I shared the story across five classes, until I got the final one.

All the courses love them. The cool part of this, they want me to read many times. Guess what? This is great for language learning... the more you repeat the better they will retain.

What was the process?

Finally, during Christmas break in December 2025, I wrote it.

Now, you can see the journey: from early drafts, to illustration, to book layout and editing. It took us five months to bring this story to life.

This final stage is not easy—so many edits, so many suggestions, and a wave of emotions behind every decision. I couple of tears came down.

AI?

Most of my earlier books and music were created before AI, with real voices, musicians, and my original work. Back then, editing and translation were very expensive.

For this project, I use AI only to support translations and clarity—the story and illustrations remain fully original.

CE is an educator, and cultural bridge-builder dedicated to early childhood language learning. Originally from Ecuador and now based in San Francisco, she integrates nature, play, and storytelling to create meaningful Spanish-learning experiences for young children.

After exploring disciplines such as acting, clowning, stand-up, and ventriloquism, CE discovered storytelling as a powerful way to connect with her inner child and with others and teach languages with the intuitive grammar method. Her work is rooted in the belief that language is not just taught—it is lived through experience, imagination, and emotion.

Through her initiative, Retobilingüismo, she is committed to expanding access to books and bilingual education, especially in rural communities in Ecuador where resources are limited. Her stories are inspired by everyday moments in nature and aim to spark curiosity, creativity, and a deep respect for the environment.

As an author and educator, CE continues to build bridges between cultures, empowering children through language, stories, and joyful learning.

Bringing Spanish, stories, and nature to every child in San Francisco

We believe every child deserves access to language, imagination, and the joy of books—regardless of their background.

“Patitos for All” is a community initiative where families can purchase a copy of 5 Patitos y los Bisontes to donate to children in local centers across San Francisco.

How It Works

  1. You purchase a book (hardcover or softcover)

  2. You choose to donate it to a partner center

  3. We deliver the book + a mini Spanish storytelling experience

✨ Each donated book becomes more than a gift—it becomes an experience with language, music, and connection.

I don’t speak Spanish fluently, but this book made me feel confident reading and learning with my child. The San Francisco setting makes it even more special—it feels like our own story.
